Minerals exploration. On February 11, 2011, Forest Supervisor Cecilia R. Seesholtz decided to implement the CuMo Exploration project by selecting Alternative B (Reduced Road Alternative). Alternative B and its environmental effects are displayed in the Environmental Assessment (EA). The decision is documented in a Decision Notice/Finding of No Significant Impact (DN/FONSI). The EA and DN/FONSI are below, along with comments received during the 30-day notice and comment period. The 45-day appeal period will begin with publication of a legal notice in the Idaho Statesman.

The Lochsa Ranger District proposes to approve the claimant?s proposal to excavate four test pits to expose vein material to test for mineral values

 

Jule Shaft Lode Exploration

Proposed

The North Fork Ranger District proposes to approve the claimant?s proposal to enter the existing Jule Mine Shaft to explore for and extract a large bulk sample over a five year period

The North Fork Ranger District proposes to approve the claimant?s proposal to excavate three test pits to expose vein material to test for mineral values

 

New Red Lead Adit Exploration

The North Fork Ranger District proposes to approve the claimant?s proposal to enter the existing New Red Lead Adit to explore for and extract a bulk sample over a five month period.

Chelsie Lode Exploration

The proposed action would excavate up to 25 sample pits to expose and sample vein material for assay. The maximum pit size would be approximately four feet wide by 20 feet long by five feet deep

Nu-West Industries, Inc., submitted a Mine and Reclamation Plan (MRP) which proposes new open-pit phosphate mining operations on federal leases I-05549, I-8289, I-04 and some adjacent private lands. It also proposes lease mods. and several S.U.A.s .

Nu-West Industries, Inc., submitted a Mine and Reclamation Plan (MRP) which proposes new open-pit phophate mining operations on federal leases I-05975, and some adjacent private lands. It also proposes lease modification and several Special Use Auth

Analyze a proposed new phosphate mine plan and associated projects and infrastructure on existing lease I-28115 and I-0258, encompassing approximately 1,500 acres on lease and approximately 400 acres off lease. Considers land exchange proposal.

Nu-West Industries, Inc., submitted a Geotechnical Study Plan which proposes to install several shallow geotechnical borings including piezometers on National Forest land adjacent to Federal Leases I-05975 in support of the Rasmussen Valley Mine EIS

The Red River Ranger District proposes to approve Ralph Reynolds and David Brush?s proposal to open an old adit and develop a new adit for the purpose of extracting bulk ore samples for testing and assay.

The Red River Ranger District proposes to approve Press Thomas proposal to excavate up to 12 test pits for the purpose of testing placer gravels for mineral values in the Newsome Creek drainage area

The Salmon River Ranger District proposes to approve Charles Bedrosian?s proposal to conduct a small placer mining operation in the Gold Lake Creek drainage of the Salmon River Ranger District.

The Red River Ranger District proposes to approve Premium Exploration?s proposal to conduct exploratory drilling at a total of eighteen drill sites in the Crooked River area of the Red River Ranger District.

Exploration drilling at from eight proposed drill pads on the ridge between Wagonhammer Creek and O'Neal Gulch. Approximately 20 miles northeast of Salmon, Idaho .

Rabbit Foot exploration drilling

The Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District, Salmon-Challis National Forest , has received a Plan of Operation from Robert Hawkins of BHLK to conduct reverse circulation exploration drilling at the old Rabbit Foot Mine site

 

Thompson Ck Modified POA

Proposed

The Thompson Creek Mining Company (TCMC) has submitted a plan of operations (POO) that would allow for mining to continue to approximately 2030. The POO proposes new surface disturbance on approximately 500 acres of private and public lands

Note One: These projects allow mining corporations to explore for valuable minerals. The exploration is always approved by the Forest Service. For these exploration projects the acreage of the mine is not given, nor the number of trees impacted.

Note Two: In these records, the Forest Service does not distinguish between a small, sustainable projects by hobbyists and massive destructive projects that demolish tens of thousands mature trees, leaving barren waste piles and pits a mile in diameter and over 1,000 feet deep.
